IMA 2: Usability Testing Report - Duolingo

About IMA 2

For the IMA 2 Usability Testing Assignment I worked in collaboration with my colleagues Maria Mercier and Lauren Lucernoni. We decided to test out the usability of one of the world's most popular apps for language learning, Duolingo. We tested the app's usability by having our friends and family perform specific tasks on the app, timing them, and counting the number of clicks needed to perform each task. We made sure that our testers understood that it was the app that was being tested, and not them. All in all, our testers found Duolingo to be quite user-friendly and enjoyable to use, which is probably one of the main reasons for its popularity. See our full Usability Testing Report here.

Educational Value of IMA 2

Usability is a really important determining factor in whether or not users will continue to use a website or educational tool, or whether they will enact their first line of defense against poor User Experience (UX), which is simply to leave. Usability, which can be defined as Learnability, Efficiency, Memorability, Errors and Satisfaction. Usability Testing is a great way to avoid losing users in this way, and should be done throughout the design and development process for any User Interface. For website and app designers, the educational value of Usability Testing is incredibly important, as it gives them valuable information for ensuring the success of their projects. As potential educational technologists and instructional designers, familiarizing ourselves with the Usability Testing process will benefit us in the future.
